Video can be a powerful tool for developing teachers. Steplab provides lots of video content, but there are also times when it’s helpful to upload your own. There are now 3 ways you can use video upload on Steplab to power up teaching in your school:
Recording as part of an observation to supercharge feedback sessions or drop-ins
Recording feedback sessions to share with others (eg. for coaching-on-coaching)
Recording your own teaching to enable remote-coaching.
Recording as part of an observation
The classroom is a busy environment and being able to watch yourself teaching can often illuminate things you wouldn’t have otherwise noticed. Furthermore, there are times when coaches just can’t make it to a lesson to observe.
Steplab makes it easy for both teachers and coaches to capture and upload snippets of lessons, generating tangible material around which to analyse teaching, select steps, and enhance feedback as part of coaching and drop-ins.
Recording feedback sessions
Everyone stands to benefit from a coach, even coaches themselves! Recording a feedback session allows coaches-of-coaches to ground their feedback in the reality of coaching practice. It’s like capturing an observation of teaching, but one step more meta.
Switching it on for your school (for Leads)
Using video is a decision that you’ll need to make as a leadership team and a school. This is why we’ve ensured that this functionality is switched off for now. To turn this on for every teacher in your school, head into Manage > Edit group details and features. At the bottom of the screen, there’s an option to tap the Video recordings enabled toggle. Once you click save, you are ready to roll!
Help us improve
We’re working hard to make video upload secure and as easy as possible. You don't need to purchase expensive kit, store videos on your phone, or work through burdensome permissions processes. You just grab your phone, tablet or laptop, scan a QR code, and hit upload.
However, it’s early days and we plan to keep improving our video upload functionality over time. If you spot something note working or have suggestions for how it can be better, get in touch—we’d love to hear from you.
